Cyprian of Carthage

Cyprian of Carthage

c. 210 – September 14, 258

Bishop & Martyr

Led the church through persecution and plague — then died a martyr

Biography

Bishop of Carthage during a period of intense Roman persecution. A wealthy Roman rhetorician who converted to Christianity, he became bishop within two years of his baptism. He led the North African church through the Decian persecution and the plague, before being martyred under Emperor Valerian.

Faith & Testimony

Cyprian's writings on church unity, the lapsed (Christians who denied the faith under persecution), and the role of bishops shaped ecclesiology for centuries. During the plague of Carthage, when pagans fled, Cyprian organized Christians to care for the sick and dying — both Christian and pagan. At his execution, he tipped his executioner and knelt calmly.
