Edward Mote
1797–1874
Baptist Pastor & Hymn Writer
Pastor and author of ‘My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less’
Biography
Edward Mote was an English Baptist pastor and hymn writer best known for writing ‘My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less’ (‘The Solid Rock’). Though raised with little Christian instruction, he later came to faith, was baptized as a young man, and eventually served for decades as pastor of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Horsham. His best-known hymn has become a lasting confession of confidence in Christ alone.
Faith & Testimony
Mote’s own testimony, baptism, pastoral ministry, and explicitly Christ-centered hymnody all make his Christian profession unusually clear. He was not simply a cultural religious figure but a Baptist pastor whose best-known work is a direct declaration of hope in Christ. That makes him a strong fit for SDG under the historical hymn-writer standard.
