Jerome

c. 342 – September 30, 420

Biblical Scholar & Translator

Translated the Bible into Latin — the Vulgate shaped Western Christianity

Biography

Early church father and biblical scholar who translated the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate), which became the standard Bible of Western Christianity for over a thousand years. A prolific writer, he produced commentaries, letters, and theological works from his monastery in Bethlehem.

Faith & Testimony

Jerome was consumed by a passion for Scripture — he learned Hebrew specifically to translate the Old Testament from the original language rather than relying on the Greek Septuagint. His Vulgate shaped Western Christianity for a millennium. Despite a famously sharp temper and bitter controversies with other church fathers, his devotion to God's Word was unquestionable.
