John of Damascus
c. 675 – December 4, 749
Theologian & Church Father
Last of the Church Fathers — systematized a millennium of theology
Biography
Syrian monk and theologian often called the 'last of the Church Fathers.' He served as a senior official in the Muslim Umayyad court before entering a monastery near Jerusalem. His 'Fountain of Knowledge' is one of the first systematic theologies in Christian history, and he was a major defender of icons during the Byzantine iconoclasm controversy.
Faith & Testimony
John of Damascus synthesized the theological achievements of the Greek church fathers into a coherent system. His defense of religious images was based on the Incarnation — because God became visible in Christ, he can be depicted in art. His hymns and theological writings remain central to Eastern Orthodox worship and theology.
