Biography
The first African American ordained by a mainstream Protestant denomination in the United States (Congregationalist, 1785). Born to a biracial couple, he was indentured as a servant, fought in the American Revolution at Ticonderoga, and went on to pastor predominantly white congregations in New England for over 30 years.
Faith & Testimony
Haynes was a committed Calvinist and gifted preacher. His sermon 'Universal Salvation: A Very Ancient Doctrine' (1805) was a masterful theological refutation of universalism that became one of the most reprinted sermons in American history. He pastored in Rutland, Vermont for 30 years and was deeply respected for his theological acumen.
