Phillis Wheatley

c. 1753 – December 5, 1784

Poet

First published African American poet — her verse overflows with faith

Biography

The first African American to publish a book of poetry (1773). Kidnapped from West Africa and enslaved in Boston, she was educated by her owners and demonstrated extraordinary literary talent. Her poetry earned her international recognition — she met George Washington and corresponded with Benjamin Franklin.

Faith & Testimony

Wheatley's poetry is saturated with Christian themes — redemption, grace, heaven, and the sovereignty of God. Her most famous poem 'On Being Brought from Africa to America' frames her enslavement within God's providence: 'Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land / Taught my benighted soul to understand / That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too.' Her faith was genuine and central to her identity.
