Roger Youderian

June 3, 1924 – January 8, 1956

Missionary & Martyr

WWII paratrooper and Purple Heart recipient who gave his life as a missionary to the Waorani

Biography

Roger Youderian was an American missionary and decorated World War II veteran who served with the Jívaro (Shuar) people in Ecuador. A paratrooper who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart, Youderian brought the same courage and discipline to the mission field. He struggled with discouragement in his work among the Jívaro before being invited to join Operation Auca. He initially hesitated, feeling unworthy, but ultimately joined the team. He was killed with his four companions on January 8, 1956.

Faith & Testimony

Youderian's faith was forged in the fires of combat and refined through seasons of missionary discouragement. His journal entries reveal a man who honestly wrestled with feelings of failure and inadequacy, yet continually returned to trust in God's sovereignty. His decision to join Operation Auca came after a spiritual breakthrough. He wrote in his journal the night before the fatal contact: 'I am called and I must go.' His story reminds us that God uses broken, doubting people for His greatest purposes.
