Biography
William Batchelder Bradbury was an American musician, composer, and church music leader whose melodies helped shape nineteenth-century evangelical hymnody. He is best known for tunes associated with songs such as ‘Jesus Loves Me,’ ‘Just As I Am,’ and ‘Sweet Hour of Prayer.’ Bradbury taught music in Baptist church settings, trained children and choirs, and helped furnish the musical vocabulary of English-speaking Protestant worship.
Faith & Testimony
Bradbury’s career was rooted in church music, hymnody, and explicitly Christian song rather than secular composition alone. His life’s work was bound up with teaching, composing, and publishing music for Christian worship and instruction. That makes him a strong fit for SDG as an obvious historical hymn composer.
