Biblical Scholar

Proved evangelical faith and rigorous scholarship go hand in hand

Biography

Scottish-born New Testament scholar who held the Rylands Chair of Biblical Criticism at the University of Manchester. He was one of the most respected evangelical biblical scholars of the 20th century, writing over 40 books including 'The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?' — a classic of Christian apologetics.

Faith & Testimony

Bruce demonstrated that rigorous academic scholarship and evangelical faith are not incompatible. Associated with the Plymouth Brethren, he brought evangelical conviction to mainstream biblical studies at a time when liberal scholarship dominated the academy. His commentaries on Acts, Romans, and Hebrews remain widely used.
