Biography
English Anglican clergyman and former slave ship captain who became one of the most beloved hymn writers in history. After a dramatic conversion at sea during a violent storm, he eventually left the slave trade and was ordained. He became a leading supporter of abolition and mentored William Wilberforce.

Newton's conversion from slave trader to devoted pastor is one of the most famous transformation stories in Christian history. He wrote 'Amazing Grace' from deep personal experience of God's mercy. His autobiography and letters reveal a man profoundly aware of his own sinfulness and God's undeserved kindness.
