Samuel Rutherford
c. 1600 – March 29, 1661
Theologian & Pastor
Scottish theologian whose Letters burn with love for Christ
Biography
Scottish Presbyterian theologian and one of the Scottish Commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. His book 'Lex, Rex' (The Law and the King) argued that the law is above the king — an idea that influenced the American founders. His 'Letters' are among the most treasured devotional writings in the English language.
Faith & Testimony
Banished from his pastorate for his Reformed convictions, Rutherford wrote letters from exile that burn with love for Christ. His 'Letters' have been called 'the nearest thing to inspiration in all the literature of Christendom.' On his deathbed he said, 'Glory, glory dwelleth in Immanuel's land.'
